Can I get all the nutrients I need from meat alone?

This was off the back of a comment of a Ken Berry video about how ChatGPT will destroy the vegan diet. While I might have much to say in time about his method and how he seemingly uses the tool, the comments section was showing a number of people having a go at this and it gave me the idea to do the same and put the results together in a single place. I'm not much of a blogger, but thus begins my Digital Discourse.

This is research, so I will not be using the general 4o model. 4o is a generalist and prone to hallucinations. It may take more time, but I will be using the o3 model. The researcher. The model that uses more "reasoning". It also has a deep research mode which I've not fully tried yet, where it will go away for more than 15 minutes before it responds. I will use this to wrap up the conversation into a full article with sources.

I started with the following prompt

I'm going to ask some questions based on nutrition and diet. I want you to answer based on scientific evidence, giving more weight to any peer reviewed studies. Also, I'm an effort to avoid bias, I want you to forget anything you know about me for the duration of this session.

I thought about pasting and formatting the results of the conversation here but a) I'm short on time and b) some might accuse me of meddling with the results.

So for now, I'll just post a link to the actual chat in full, now made public here.

I will however list the actual questions I asked. If anyone is curious as to the results, please have a read of the discussion and let me know your thoughts.

Prompts:

  1. Can I get all the nutrients I need from meat alone?
  2. What supplements would be recommended?
  3. Can I get all the nutrients I need from a plant only based diet?
  4. Assuming the best version of each diet. Great care is taken to get as many nutrients without supplementation as possible, and without fortified foods. Give a concise list of supplements for each diet, that would be non negotiable for optimal health.
  5.  And is there anything wrong with taking a supplement to fill in the gaps? Any negative consequences and do they provide the nutrients required?
  6. I'm going to switch you to deep research mode now. I want you to verify and validate everything we've spoken about so far and summarize, with references and links.
[at which point it asked me to clarify and confirm certain aspects]
  7. All of the above please. I want a full review of both versions of diet in an article, with references to recommended supplements assuming a general diet vs one that captures as many nutrients as possible from a whole food diet. As an extra, include a comparison of health outcomes comparing the two diets where possible.
At which point it created a compelling article that seemed quite impressive. I might question some of it's language and terminology later, and be more careful with my prompts to make it avoid more subjective language in the future... but overall I was very impressed with the output.
